Vertigo redefines the language of wood surfaces, transforming flooring into an architectural device capable of generating space, relationships and sensory well-being.
Born from the collaboration between Fiemme Tremila and Giulio Iacchetti, the project merges design research with advanced woodworking expertise, translating a primal gesture into a modular and buildable system.
The Project
Vertigo originates from the desire to overcome the horizontal boundary of flooring and evolve it into a spatial surface. The plank extends, bends and rises, creating a continuous material transition between floor and wall that reshapes the perception of the interior.
The result is a micro-architecture of niches, thresholds and volumes — intimate spatial conditions that redefine the relationship between body, material and environment.
In Vertigo, the floor is no longer a technical element but an architectural presence: a three-dimensional surface capable of structuring space and opening new perspectives for interior design.
The project was developed within NODI – Culture, Business and Wood Design from Trentino, promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento and coordinated by Trentino Sviluppo in collaboration with Trentino Marketing, curated by Paolo Baldessari and Aldo Colonetti.
The Concept
Vertigo emerges from a radical yet elementary intuition: imagining a plank that transcends its horizontal vocation and unfolds into space. The outcome is a continuous architectural gesture — an alcove-like environment that envelops the individual and establishes a direct dialogue between material and architecture.
A board “with nostalgia for the sky”, transforming a technical surface into a spatial experience.
Three key elements define this evolution:
Horizontal Extension
The plank originates from the floor — a stable and continuous plane rooted within the domestic landscape.
Curvature
The moment of transition, where the wood bends seamlessly without interruption. Handcrafted and inspired by ski-building technologies, the curvature allows the surface to change direction while preserving material continuity and structural integrity.
Vertical Development
The plank rises upward and becomes architecture. The floor emancipates itself from the horizontal plane, acquiring spatial depth and tridimensionality to form a monolithic element connecting floor and wall.
Giulio Iacchetti
Industrial designer and two-time recipient of the Compasso d’Oro award, Giulio Iacchetti was also honoured with the Premio dei Premi for Innovation by the President of the Italian Republic for the Eureka Coop project.
His solo exhibition “Giulio Iacchetti. Disobedient Objects” was presented at the Triennale di Milano.
Consistently engaged in exploring the relationship between craftsmanship and industrial design, in 2012 he founded Internoitaliano, a platform dedicated to contemporary Italian manufacturing culture.
